On 1st December, Independent Academic Research Studies in partnership with the RJC held "Restorative Justice & the Secure Estate: Alternatives for Young People in Custody.

On 6th November, Dr. Theo Gavrielides visited Volos, Greece where he spoke about the role of restorative justice in addressing the impact of the recession on crime.

Early in November, IARS' Dr. Theo Gavrielides and Ben Lyon met with European academics and policy makers to present the interim findings of the EU funded 3ERJ programme.

Independent Academic Research Studies wrote to the EU Commission expressing concerns regarding the proposed EU Directive on Victims planned to replace the 2001 Framework Decision on the Standing of Victims.

Independent Academic Research Studies (IARS) released its report "Restorative Justice and the Secure Estate: Alternatives for Young People". The findings are based on a UK focused, three year (2009-11) research project.

The European Society of Criminology held its annual conference in Vilnius with the theme "Rethinking Crime and Punishment in Europe".

7/8/11: During September, commuters travelling on Transport for London’s (TFL) tube and over ground network will see posters promoting Independent Academic Research Studies’ (IARS) youth-led 99% campaign.

The 99% campaign is shocked and saddened by the riots and violence in London. As we condemn violence, we are proud of the majority of young Londoners who prevent help restore London.

IARS is shocked and saddened by last night’s riots in Tottenham where more than 40 people were arrested and buildings and vehicles set alight. Twenty-six police officers were hurt in the violence which erupted after a protest over the fatal shooting by police of 29 year-old Mark Duggan on Thursday.

IARS members are encouraged to attend the Bucks New University, Institute for Diversity Research, Inclusivity Communities and Society one day conference on 13 September. IARS will be presenting findings from its human rights and youth policy work.

IARS sends its condolences to the families of the hate crime victims at the youth camp in Norway and the bombing in the capital. At least 85 young people died when a gunman ran amok on Utoeya island on Friday, hours after an Oslo bomb killed seven.
