The 99% campaign is shocked and saddened by the riots and violence in London. As we condemn violence, we are proud of the majority of young Londoners who prevent help restore London.
IARS, the youth-led social policy think-tank running the 99% campaign will work with its partners, such as the Metropolitan Police, Home Office, the Mayor of London and the Crown Prosecution Service, to help restore public confidence. A young person interviewed in Tottenham summarised the feeling that currently exists amongst his peers "Police know what they should have done, they should have come to speak to the community themselves," he said. "They don't care."
Dr. Theo Gavrielides, IARS Director said: “Yes, many young Londoner are hungry and angry, and yes we are going through the worst recession since World War II, but violence is not an alternative. The 99% of Young Londoners know this. Young Londoners must show the way to restoration and reconciliation. They have done it in the past and they can do it again now”.
Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said to the Evening Standard: “To all those who have suffered the destruction of their property, and to all those who have been terrified by rioting youths, I can only say how sorry I am”. The 99% of Young Londoners join the Mayor in sending their sympathy.
IARS and the 99% campaign urges young Londoners to stay calm and focused on what they know best which is to lead by example and through their positive stories. This is not the time for blame, name and shame. Let’s join positive cleaning and restoration initiatives such as the Clean Up London Campaign.
