Crime Prevention Minister, Baroness Browning, has announced the launch of two new Home Office funding streams totalling £14m. The new pots of money will be made available to the voluntary sector to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour through community projects.
The ‘Community Action Against Crime: Innovation Fund’ which consists of a total of £5m, aims to encourage new and creative ways of working within communities to tackle crime; a further £5m has been set aside to continue this funding stream into 2012-13. The fund aims to encourage its recipients to work in closer partnership with local Community Safety Partnerships as well as other statutory agencies that work to improve community safety.
£4m of funding is also being channelled through the 'Choices Fund', which has a specific focus on initiatives that reduce substance misuse and youth offending. The programme aims to enable small grassroots organisations to achieve early intervention and targeted prevention.
These new funding priorities reflect the Government's move to empower communities to take greater control over the local areas in which they live. Recent policy changes including the introduction of Police and Crime Commissioners and the publication of local crime and antisocial behaviour statistics have all further demonstrated the practical implementation of the Government's localism agenda.
