IARS' Youth Policy Response Group have submitted their response to the Department for Education's Positive for Youth consultation.
The consultation centred around a new cross-Government policy statement on services for young people.
Comments have been sought from the voluntary sector on a series of themed discussion papers regarding various elements of youth policy.
The Youth Policy Response Group submitted responses to two discussion papers: 'Young peoples role in society' and 'Preventing youth crime and substance misuse'. Organisations represented in the discussion included the Anne Frank Trust UK, Envision, ChangeMakers, the Citizenship Foundation, The Howard League for Penal Reform, Mentor UK and NCVYS.
The Group's response highlights the value of drawing on a youth-led approach in order to involve young people in decision-making processes, as well as the need to embrace a whole community approach in order to effectively tackle youth crime and substance misuse. Further, the response raises concerns about the Government's approach to young people as a homogenous group, in addition to the lack of acceptable reference to equalities and diversity throughout all discussion papers.
