| 2011 | The false and failed youth justice & equality policy: a new direction |
Original research paper written by T. Gavrielides. Many have argued that youth violence, inequality and underachievement are consequences of a failing society and social injustice. The paper argues that these failures are not due to lack of resources and an uneven distribution of wealth. They are due to the acceptance of prejudice and despair as natural modern phenomena. The paper also argues that acceptance creates “disadvantage thinking” and policies, law and practices that are shaped to reach targets within this negative framework. A vicious circle of defeatism is created. As a way forward, “positive thinking” is encouraged through a user-led movement of positive social engagement. We call this “the 99% campaign”, a developing youth justice movement focusing on inequality, disadvantage and youth violence. The initiative is run by Independent Academic Research Studies (IARS), an independent charity empowering young people to engage equally and democratically in civic life. |

| 2011 | Restorative justice and the secure estate: Alternatives for young people in custody |
A report by Dr. Theo Gavrielides based on a UK-focused, three year (2009-11) research project. Dr. Gavrielides said: “Restorative justice is back on the agenda; it now appeals to the politicians and this report comes at a critical point as the government is reviewing its policy on prisons. It was not my intention to speak for or against restorative justice but through the independence that EU funds allowed us to have, provide a critical, evidence-based analysis of the potential of restorative justice in the secure estate. Young people were at the heard of our research and we hope that the findings open up a new debate on effective and alternative practices”.
