Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone has recently responded to IARS Youth Policy Response Group's letter, which outlined concerns with proposed changes to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC Building a Fairer Britain). The consultation proposed a vast number of changes to the EHRC's governing statute, the Equality Act 2006.
IARS' letter to the Minister in June 2011 expressed agreement with calls for increased accountability and transparency of the EHRC. However, concerns were highlighted with new proposals which would impact negatively on the unique opportunities, provided by the Equality Act 2006, to eradicate persistent inequalities.
Featherstone's response (see below) expresses the Government's commitment to taking the Equality Act 2006 very seriously. Further, it indicated the importance that the Government places on retaining the EHRC's independence and commitment to ensuring that the EHRC retains its 'A' status accreditation as a National Human Rights Institution.
IARS will be liaising with EHRC and the organisations who formed the Policy Group to take the outstanding matters forward. A meeting with the Minister will be pursued.
