This module aims to develop young people’s knowledge, skills and attitudes so that they have a better understanding of the criminal justice system and are better equipped to handle and make sense of encounters with the police.
Who is this for?
Young people aged 16-25. An interest or background in law is not necessary.
Duration
3 hours. This module is designed to be delivered in conjunction with the other modules on legal capability. This module is also well suited to be delivered in conjunction with the modules Active Young Citizens and Human Rights and Young People
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course participants will:
- Gain an understanding of the principles underpinning the exercise of police powers and the functions of the criminal justice system
- Acquire knowledge of the legal foundations of police powers, in particular the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984
- Develop oral advocacy skills by putting the law into practise in stop and search scenarios
- Develop written advocacy skills by putting the law into practise in police complaints scenarios
- Develop team working skills by working with other participants to solve problems
- Feel increased personal confidence when dealing with the police
- Have increased awareness and understand of and confidence in the criminal justice system
