Congratulations to Southbank Mosaics who won the 99% Campaign poster competition! The new 99% poster will go live in September 2011 in the London transport network (e.g. tube, buses, rail), TFL offices and website.
Southbank Mosaics are a not-for-profit organisation whose team of artists run an open studio in the crypt of St John's Church on the Southbank. They aim to make London more beautiful by putting high quality mosaics onto our streets. For eight years they have worked voluntarily with young offenders, supporting their rehabilitation through creative workshops which either go on our streets, or are for sale in galleries.
We’ve had several designs capturing the 99% message and after deliberations with our young people, we have selected a poster that is based on a mosaic that was created by young offenders from London. The work was made during pay-back sessions with London Probation Service and with Lambeth Youth Offending Team. The group that works with these offenders aims to encourage their creative and design skills, introduce them to aesthetics, support them to gain qualifications, encourage them to transform their behaviour through modeling good practice and give them an opportunity to leave their mark on London. All the work is unique and authentic. We believe that apart from the strong positive message that comes through the design, the poster has a story which is powerful in its own right.
The winning mosaic put forward by the young volunteers at Southbank Mosaics entitled "Granny in the Hood" features a teenage boy helping an elderly woman with her shopping. The image sends out a clear warning about accepting stereotypes of young people and draws attention the very positive contributions that many young people are making to their communities. This is a message that is central to the 99% Campaign.
