IARS is shocked and saddened by last night’s riots in Tottenham where more than 40 people were arrested and buildings and vehicles set alight. Twenty-six police officers were hurt in the violence which erupted after a protest over the fatal shooting by police of 29 year-old Mark Duggan on Thursday.
Dr. Theo Gavrielides, IARS Director said: “As we wait to hear about the circumstances that surround the killing of Mark and London returns to normal, we must remain calm. We cannot return to the 1985 conflicts. We are disappointed that yet again the grief of a family has been turned into a riot, violence and looting. Young Londoners must show the way to restoration, peace and reconciliation. They have done it in the past and they can do it again now”.
IARS, the youth-led social policy think-tank running the 99% campaign will work with its partners, such as the Metropolitan Police, Home Office, the Mayor of London and the Crown Prosecution Service, to help restore public confidence. A young person interviewed at the scene summarised the feeling that currently exists amongst his peers "Police know what they should have done, they should have come to speak to the community themselves," he said. "They don't care."
IARS and the 99% campaign urges young Londoners to stay calm and focused on what they know best which is to lead by example and through their positive stories. This is not the time for blame, name and shame. We will be pushing for a proper investigation and community involvement in problem solving.
