Biography

Dr Karim Murji has since 2000 worked as a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Open University, Milton Keynes. He has written distance learning materials for courses in Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology, Geography and Politics. His research interests include migration, identity and diaspora, equality and diversity, media and representation and criminal justice issues concerned with policing and drugs. He is the author or co-author/editor of five books including Policing Drugs (Ashgate, 1998) and, co-edited with John Solomos, Racialization: Studies in theory and practice (Oxford University Press, 2005). His recent publications in these areas are in the journals, Migrations & Identities, Journal of Transatlantic Studies, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Sociology, and the Journal of Drug Issues.

Karim works outside the academic world in a variety of roles. He served as an Independent Member of the Metropolitan Police Authority (2004-08), where he was the deputy chair of both the Planning and Performance Committee and the Professional Standards Committee. He co-chaired the MPA scrutiny on crime recording and contributed to other scrutinises on talent management and succession planning, and gun crime. He has undertaken various consultancies for the Council of Europe, the Home Office and publishers including Oxford University Press, Willan, Longman and Ashgate. Karim is also currently a member of the Investigating Committee of the General Teaching Council (GTC), the Transformative Justice Forum and the Home Office Drugs Diversity Forum. He has also in the recent past been a member of the Home Office BME Trust and confidence group, a Joseph Rowntree Foundation advisory committee and on the Council of T3E-UK.

Karim lives in west London, is the father of one son, supports Chelsea, and tries to participate in a reading group and maintain an interest in the visual arts.
