It is with great sadness that we inform you that Gary Francis of Hackney CVS passed away on Sunday 3rdJune 2012 following a long battle with cancer.

A much respected member of the Hackney community, Gary started Hackney CVS nearly six years ago and dedicated his life to community work with young people in the area.

Gary was particularly passionate about youth crime and, despite his illness, worked up until the Wednesday before he died on a project very close to his heart – the young people’s stop and search monitoring group. Through his work in the community, Gary also helped increase awareness of the street gang dynamic and how to effectively help young people out of gangs.

In order to commemorate Gary’s life Hackney CVS have set up a Gary Francis Memorial Fund to provide awards to Hackney young people in hardship and also to help young people develop their enterprise ideas as a route into employment. Hackney CVS has already donated £5k to this fund, but they are also looking for donations from local organisations, individuals and businesses. Donations can be made at www.hcvs.org.uk

Gary’s funeral will be held on June 22 at 10:30am at St Peter in Chains, 12 Womersley Road, N8 9AE. There will be a funeral reception from 2-8pm at Chestnut Community Centre, The Pavillion, St Anne’s Road, South Tottenham, N15 5BN. All are welcome at the funeral and reception. Gary’s family request that those attending do not wear black.
