Dr. Theo Gavrielides is the Founder of the IARS International Institute. He founded it in 2001 in his kitchen in the hope that it can give voice and representation to marginalised groups in decision making, policies and practices independently of location or background.
A young migrant himself at the time, he believed that by bringing people together through the sharing of power and the values of dignity, equality and fairness, he can challenge top down structures of control and facilitate the development of strong democracies.
In February 2020, Dr. Gavrielides stepped down from his role as IARS’ Director after almost 20 years of building a strong charity, which he hopes will continue his legacy. He now runs on a part-time basis his charitable NGO the Restorative Justice for All International Institute, which he also founded.
He is considered one of the world’s leading experts on restorative justice, and has published extensively on social justice matters. In 2021, Professor Gavrielides received The Liberty of the Old Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey award as part of the Southwark Civic Awards 2020 for his contribution to the community during difficult times. Dr. Gavrielides is also a Visiting Professor at the University of East London, Distinguished Policy Fellow at the School of Regulation and Global Governance (REGNet), Australian National University, an Adjunct Professor at the School of Criminology of Simon Fraser University (Canada) as well as a Visiting Professor at Buckinghamshire New University (UK).
